Solid wood slab furniture made on Orcas Island
At Orcas Workshop, each piece of furniture begins with a locally salvaged tree. We custom mill and kiln-dry each log for up to 2 years. The wood’s character and natural features guide our transformation of each found log into a functional work of art. The knots, unusual grain patterns, natural checking, and live edges inspire our final creation and make each piece stand out.
Part of our art form is in the stains we choose or don’t choose. We like to play with a variety of natural finish techniques to produce highlights, color contrasts and durability. Certain finishing techniques will enhance the grain and deepen the color of the wood, along with providing a protective layer. We often leave pieces raw to allow nature to do it’s work. As your piece ages it will take on a patina that is sought after by many and has a story to tell.
